OFFICIONÉ for MATTHEW SPIEGELMAN —— Officioné is a book about the intersection point between spirituality and illusion. The artist, Matthew Spiegelman, finds inspiration in the paraphernalia and iconography of stoners, tokers, and hippies as well as in the myth and magic of the late 19th century movement of so-called psychic or spirit photography. Images of marijuana gardens, smoking apparatuses, tie-dyed clothes, beaded curtains, and dreadlocks are the subject matter here, though the cumulative effect of Spiegelman’s photographs goes beyond the maligned and mundane, exploring an unfamiliar side of smoking culture.
